There are 4 kinds of knots.Forward and backward are the 2 basic knots.
On the left is a forward knot.You use your left string to make a 4 shape over the right string.And you need to knot twice.
On the right is a backward knot.You use your right string to make a reverse 4 shape on the left string.And again you need to knot twice.
There are 2 let's just say 'special' knots.A forward backward knot and a backward forward knot.
On the left is a forward backward knot.You make it by making one forward and one backward knot.
On the right is a backward forward knot.You make it by making one backward and one forward knot.
